Vulpes velox

Golden Jackal

The Swift Fox received its name for its swiftness. It can reach speeds up to 30 miles per hour. It is the smallest North American wild canid, weighing from 4 to 6 pounds. The Swift Fox is a buff-colored fox with light tan to white on its throat, chest, and belly. Its muzzle is dark gray to black on either side, as is the base and tip of its tail. The Swift fox is nocturnal.

The Swift Fox’s range once extended from central Alberta, Canada, southward through the Great Plains to west-central Texas. Nearly extinct in Canada conservation efforts by the Swift Fox Conservation Team has returned this tiny canid to acceptable levels in the US and Canada.
